Crucifix from the St. Mary Church is a magnificent netherlandish sculpture made in the early Northern Renaissance style. Walnut wooden statue, painted without traditional ground is remarkable and precisely done masterpiece.
Detailed studies before intervention helped to establish a strong conservation program and in 2013 treatment was executed.
The main problem was dark inpainting from last conservation. Retouches made in the 80’s with arabic gum as a binder, changed colour. Specifically, parts with white zinc became dark. After removing these retouches new inpainting with Laropal resin was added.
Retouchings appear as dark patches on the original surface
We can also see yellow fluorescence of a zinc white.
